Rogers, Ginger (16 July 1911–25 April 1995), actress, dancer, and musical comedy performer, was born Virginia Katherine McMath in Independence, Missouri, the daughter of William Eddins McMath and Lela Emogen Owens, a writer. Her parents soon divorced, and her mother (who died in 1977) became the most important person in Rogers’s life, managing her career with force and confidence and often delivering pointed advice that Rogers says she countered only rarely, and then usually to her later regret. Her mother, she recalls in her autobiography, was variously “my writer, designer, seamstress, business manager, confidante, and chaperone” (Rogers, p. 50)....
