Negri, Pola (31 December 1899?–01 August 1987), silent screen actress, was born Barbara Apolonia Chalupiec in Lipno or Janowa, Poland, the daughter of Jerzy Mathias-Chalupiec, a Slovak immigrant, and Eleanora de Kielczeska. The facts of Negri’s life, especially her early years, have been obscured by romanticized memory and successive coats of studio publicity. Her year of birth has been reported as any from 1894 to 1899; her father’s occupation has ranged from count to violinist to tin master; her autobiography declares that her mother came from “impoverished nobility.” In any case, she claimed that her father was taken away by Russian czarist authorities in 1905 and that she and her mother subsequently moved to Warsaw....
