Sherwood, William Hall (31 January 1854–07 January 1911), piano virtuoso and music educator, was born in Lyons, New York, the son of Lyman H. Sherwood, an Episcopal minister, and Mary Balis. Sherwood’s early musical instruction came from his father, who in 1854 had established the Lyons Musical Academy, and from Edward Heimberger in Rochester and Jan Pychowski in Geneseo.
