Patton, Charlie ( April 1891–28 April 1934), blues singer and guitarist, was born on Heron’s Place between Bolton and Edwards, Mississippi, the oldest son of William Patton and Annie Martin, farmers. Patton was of mixed descent, with white, black, and Native American forebears. His name is sometimes spelled “Charley.” The nature of his formal schooling is uncertain but may have included some elementary school education. During Patton’s early teen years, his family moved to the Will Dockery plantation between Cleveland and Ruleville, which in time became the base of his musical activities....
