Newman, Alfred (17 March 1901–17 February 1970), conductor and film composer, was born in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of Michael Nemirovsky (later Newman), a Russian immigrant and struggling produce dealer, and Luba Koskoff, a cantor’s daughter who instilled a love for piano in young Alfred.
