Huston, Walter (06 April 1884–07 April 1950), actor, was born Walter Houghston in Toronto, Canada, the son of Robert Moore Houghston, a cabinetmaker, and Elizabeth McGibbon. He changed the spelling of his name as a young man to simplify its pronunciation. Walter was the youngest of four children, all of whom were of school age when their father died. Walter’s older brother Alec supported the family, enabling the other children to continue their schooling. Huston attended public school until age seventeen, when he took a job in a hardware store. He continued his education by taking drama classes at the Toronto College of Music, performing on stage for the first time at age eighteen.
