Edstrom, Pehr David Emanuel (27 March 1873–12 August 1938), sculptor, was born in Vetlanda, Sweden, the son of Jonas Peter Edstrom and Charlotta Carolina Gustafsson. Jonas Peter Edstrom was the superintendent of a reform school for delinquent city boys, run by the mission school Ahlsborg. In the late 1870s the school closed, and Edstrom's father could not find work. In 1880 he and his family emigrated to Ottamwa, Iowa, where his father worked as a minister of the Swedish mission church. After a few years of schooling, Edstrom started working as a newsboy and then in various factories, including the Morell meatpacking plant. He met Johannes Scheiwe, an immigrant artist educated at the Berlin academy, who stimulated Edstrom's interest in drawing and modelling. Scheiwe became his teacher and mentor....
