Neagle, John (04 November 1796–17 September 1865), portrait painter, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Maurice Neagle, a native of Doneraile, County Cork, Ireland, and Susannah Taylor, the daughter of a New Jersey farmer. His father died in 1800. Neagle attended grammar school in Philadelphia and briefly studied art with the drawing master and artist Pietro Ancora.
