Goldberg, Rube (04 July 1883–07 December 1970), cartoonist, writer, and sculptor, was born Reuben Lucius Goldberg in San Francisco, the son of Hannah Cohn and Max Goldberg, a land speculator and campaigner for politicians. By the age of four, Goldberg was drawing pictures, and at eleven he began taking art classes from a sign painter. Evidently influenced by his father’s attempts to discourage his artistic tendencies, Goldberg went to the University of California at Berkeley instead of enrolling in art school.
