Garland, Hazel (28 January 1913–05 April 1988), journalist, was born Hazel Barbara Maxine Hill in Burnett, Indiana, the oldest of sixteen children of George and Hazel Hill, African-American farmers. Her family moved to western Pennsylvania in the early 1920s, where her father sought work as a coal miner. She was forced to drop out of school to help support her family and found work as a maid for several years. She supplemented her income by dancing, singing, and playing the drums with local bands. On 26 January 1935 she married Percy A. Garland, an industrial photographer and businessman. They settled in the Pittsburgh suburb of McKeesport, where she lived for the rest of her life. They had one daughter, Phyllis Garland, who was born in October 1935....
