Yates, Richard (03 February 1926–07 November 1992), writer, was born in Yonkers, New York, the son of Vincent Yates, a salesman with General Electric, and Ruth Maurer Yates. In 1929 Vincent Yates divorced his wife, and he rarely saw his children thereafter, though he continued to provide financial support. Yates's mother was a sculptor who had studied in New York and abroad, but her children apparently resented the attention she paid to her art, believing she wasted resources that should have been spent on them. Indeed Richard Yates's bitterness toward his mother and what he described as a careless upbringing became the constant themes of both his professional and his personal lives, and he placed family unhappiness at the center of each of his novels and short stories, drawing repeatedly on thinly disguised personal experience....
