Bates, Ernest Sutherland (14 October 1879–04 December 1939), educator and author, was born in Gambier, Ohio, the son of Cyrus Stearns Bates, occupation unknown, and Laverna Sutherland Bates. After graduating from the University School of Cleveland, he entered the University of Michigan, where he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in 1902 and 1903, respectively. He married Michigan alumna Florence Fisher on 6 August 1902 and a year later began his academic career as a lecturer in English at Oberlin College, remaining there until 1905.
