Thayer, Tiffany (01 March 1902–23 August 1959), novelist and advertising copywriter, was born Tiffany Ellsworth Thayer in Freeport, Illinois, the son of Elmer Ellsworth Thayer, an actor, and Sybil Farrar, an actress. He was raised by his father in Rockford, Illinois, after his parents were divorced in 1907 but at the age of fourteen left him to join his mother in Chicago, where he dropped out of high school in the middle of his junior year and took a job with a commercial artist. In 1917 he became a copyboy with a Chicago daily newspaper. A natural attraction to the theater led him to seek work as an actor, and from 1918 to 1926 he played minor roles with stock companies and road shows in the Midwest, returning to newspaper work as a reporter and working in antiquarian bookstores in Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland between acting jobs....
