Russell, Charles Edward (25 September 1860–23 April 1941), journalist and reformer, was born in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Edward Russell, a newspaper editor, and Lydia Rutledge. Russell was graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont in 1881, after which he returned to Davenport to work at his father’s newspaper. In 1884 he married Abby Osborne Rust, whom he had met while in Vermont. The couple had one son. Russell’s father was a crusading editor and abolitionist, and Russell was introduced to reform ideas in his early days in journalism....
