Rowson, Susanna Haswell ( February 1762–02 March 1824), writer and educator, was born in Portsmouth, England, the daughter of William Haswell, naval officer, and Susanna Musgrave. Her mother died shortly after childbirth, and her father entrusted her to relatives when he was sent for naval duty in colonial Massachusetts. There he married Rachel Woodward and in 1766 brought the five-year-old Susanna to settle with the family in Hull, Massachusetts. Though she received no formal schooling, the child Susanna benefited from her father’s good library. In 1775 the American patriots imprisoned Lieutenant Haswell and his family before returning them to England in 1778 in a prisoner exchange....
