Paine, Albert Bigelow (10 July 1861–09 April 1937), author and Mark Twain's literary executor, author and Mark Twain’s literary executor, was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the fifth child of Samuel Estabrook Paine, a Vermont storekeeper, and Mercy Coval Kirby. The Paine family soon moved to Xenia, Illinois, where Paine attended school and worked in the village store. At twenty he traveled to St. Louis and learned photography.
