Mitchell, Margaret (08 November 1900–16 August 1949), novelist, was born Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of Eugene Muse Mitchell, an attorney, and May Belle Stephens. Mitchell attended the public elementary schools in Atlanta and graduated from Washington Seminary, an elite girls’ finishing school in her native city, in 1918. Her mother had always stressed education, but Mitchell disliked formal schooling and never performed particularly well academically, and this was a major source of conflict between them. At her mother’s insistence, Mitchell enrolled in Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, in September 1918, but her mother’s death in the influenza epidemic that winter made it unnecessary for her to continue, and in 1919 she returned to Atlanta to take her mother’s place in society and in the household of her very proper father, one of the most conservative but best-connected men in the New South city....
