Drake, Joseph Rodman (07 August 1795–21 September 1820), writer of verse, was born in New York City, the son of Jonathan Drake and Hannah Lawrence, aristocrats. Drake’s father died when he and his three sisters were quite young; his mother remarried and moved to New Orleans with her daughters. Drake stayed in New York and grew up with close relatives, the Hunts and the Rodmans. He studied medicine and in 1816 received his degree from Queen’s College, a private school.
