Neuberger, Maurine Brown (09 January 1907–22 February 2000), U.S. senator, was born Maurine Brown in Cloverdale, Oregon, the daughter of Walter T. Brown, a doctor, and Ethel Kelty Brown, a schoolteacher. She had one brother. Upon graduating from Bethel High School in rural Polk County, Oregon, Maurine then earned a teaching certificate at Oregon College of Education in Monmouth (now Western Oregon University). After teaching physical education and modern dance for a few years in Newberg, she attended the University of Oregon and received her B.A. degree in 1929.
