Patten, Simon Nelson (01 May 1852–24 July 1922), economist, was born in Sandwich, De Kalb County, Illinois, the son of William Patten, a farmer and state legislator, and Elizabeth Nelson Pratt Patten. After attending a local district school, he entered Jennings Seminary in nearby Aurora, graduating in 1874. After farming for a year, he entered Northwestern University only to drop out after a few months. On the advice of Joseph French Johnson, a friend from Jennings, Patten departed the United States and entered the University of Halle in Germany....
