Hoffman, Abbie (30 November 1936–12 April 1989), radical activist, was born Abbott Howard Hoffman in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of John Hoffman, the founder of the Worcester Medical Supply Co., and Florence Schanberg. Hoffman’s family had emigrated to the United States from Russia around the turn of the century. Growing up in Worcester, he identified less with his Jewish roots than he did with American culture. Priding himself as a rebel, he hung out with street toughs, playing sports, gambling, and hustling pool. At the same time, he excelled academically and worked as a salesman for his father....
