Holmes, George Frederick (02 August 1820–04 November 1897), college administrator, educator, and author, was born at Straebrock, Demerara, British Guiana, the son of Joseph Henry Hendon Holmes, a judge advocate, and Maryanne Pemberton. At the age of two he was sent to live with his maternal grandfather, Stephen Pemberton, at Bishop Wearmouth near Sunderland, England. After completing ten years of study at the Grange, he entered the University of Durham in 1836. In June 1837, despite displaying considerable academic promise as a scholar, Holmes departed England, never to return. While details of his separation vary, he apparently incurred the wrath of several family members with the purchase of an expensive gift that was beyond his means to repay....
