Holvik, Johan Andreas (19 May 1880–25 November 1960), amateur archeologist and professor of Norwegian, was born in Howard, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota), to Norwegian immigrants Peder and Eli (Skroppen) Holvik. Holvik graduated from Madison State Normal School in Madison, South Dakota, and in 1907 earned a BA from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Following coursework at the University of Oslo from 1909 to 1911 and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, from 1912 to 1913, Holvik received an MA from St. Olaf College in 1913. On 12 April 1912 he married Caroline Heltne in Lake Mills, Iowa. Holvik taught at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, from 1913 to 1919 and worked for Lutheran Brotherhood in St. Paul, Minnesota, from 1919 to 1923 before going to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1923 to teach Norwegian....
