Kitagawa, Joseph Mitsuo (08 March 1915–07 October 1992), religion scholar, was born in Osaka, Japan, the son of Chiyokichi Kitagawa, an Anglican priest, and Kumi Nozaki Kitagawa. Young Kitagawa was reared in an Anglican parsonage in the Nara region of Japan. He received his undergraduate education at Rikkyo University and earned a Bungaku-shi, the equivalent of a bachelor of arts degree, in 1937. Intending to follow his father's profession, Kitagawa traveled to the United States in 1941 and enrolled at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, an Episcopal seminary in Berkeley, California....
