Vickrey, William S. (21 June 1914–11 October 1996), Nobel Prize-winning economist, Nobel Prize–winning economist, was born William Spencer Vickrey in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, the son of Charles Vernon Vickrey, an executive with the nonprofit organization Near East Relief, and Ada Eliza Spencer Vickrey. After his family relocated to the New York City area in 1914, he grew up surrounded by the victims of the Armenian massacres, an experience that left him with a profoundly developed social conscience. Between graduating from high school and enrolling at Yale, he attended prep school for a year. Interested in electrical engineering and sociology as well as a host of other subjects, he obtained his college degree in mathematics with high honors in 1935....
