Owsley, Frank Lawrence (20 January 1890–21 October 1955), historian, was born in rural Montgomery County, Alabama, the son of Lawrence Monroe Owsley, a farmer who rented land to African-American sharecroppers, and Annie Scott McGehee. In childhood Owsley spent much time listening to aging Confederate veterans; as an adult he cherished these remembrances of the old South and the Civil War. The stories and recollections of his mother also intensified Owsley’s love for his native land....
