Hart, Albert Bushnell (01 July 1854–16 June 1943), historian, was born in Clarksville, Pennsylvania, the son of Albert Gaillard Hart, a physician, and Mary Crosby Hornell. Hart, who grew up and went to school during the Civil War and Reconstruction, viewed the historic events of the period through the eyes of his father, an abolitionist during the antebellum era and a volunteer surgeon in an Ohio regiment during the war. As an adult, Hart often spoke of his antislavery, pro-Union background and how it had helped shape his sense of civic morality and his basic understanding of the nation’s history....
