Jacobson, Nathan (05 October 1910–05 December 1999), mathematician, was born Nachman Arbisar in Warsaw, then part of Russia, the son of Gershon Yakov Arbuser and Pesse (later Pauline) Aidel Rosenberg. Because it was incorrectly converted from the Jewish calendar, Jacobson's birthday appears as 8 September 1910 on all official U.S. documents. “Arbisar” is the English transliteration of Nachman's Yiddish surname that was used at Ellis Island when he immigrated in 1917, whereas “Arbuser” is the transliteration used when his father had immigrated in 1913....
