Meeuse, Bastiaan Jacob Dirk (09 May 1916–27 July 1999), botanist and naturalist, was born in the small town of Sukabumi on the island of Java, the son of Adrianus Meeuse and Jannigje Kruithof Meeuse. His father taught mathematics and natural science in an agricultural college, and his mother taught in a Dutch-language primary school for Chinese children. Both parents were in the Dutch East Indian colonial service. Bastiaan and his brother Adriaan, who was two years older than Bastiaan, were taught by their mother at home, and they also went to the Chinese school with her and sat in the back of the class. During free time the boys enjoyed the tropical environment, and started collecting and raising butterflies and moths....
