Sepkoski, J. John, Jr. (26 July 1948–01 May 1999), paleontologist, was born Joseph John “Jack” Sepkoski, Jr., in Presque Isle, Maine, the son of Joseph John Sepkoski, Sr., a chemist, and Sally Feuchtwanger Sepkoski, a part-time librarian. Sepkoski's father was transferred several times while working for the Allied Chemical Corporation, and his childhood years were spent in New Jersey, Iowa, and Syracuse, New York, where he graduated from high school in 1966. As a teenager Sepkoski was a drummer in a rock-and-roll band, and he maintained an interest in cutting-edge, alternative rock music throughout the rest of his life; he also built furniture as a pastime....
