Nolan, Thomas B. (21 May 1901–02 August 1992), geologist and seventh director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), geologist and seventh director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), was born Thomas Brennan Nolan in Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, the only child of Frank Wesley Nolan, a physician, and Anna Sarah Brennan Nolan, a schoolteacher. When the Nolans separated in 1902, two years after their marriage, Anna and Thomas returned to her parents' home in New Haven, Connecticut. There young Nolan worked after school and during five summers at the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, rising from office boy to manager of a division's sales staff....
