Whitney, Hassler (23 March 1907–10 May 1989), mathematician, was born in New York City, the son of Edward Baldwin Whitney, a judge, and Josepha Newcomb. Whitney was a grandson of philologist William D. Whitney and astronomer Simon Newcomb, both of whom were members of the National Academy of Sciences.
