Sikorsky, Igor Ivanovich (25 May 1889–26 October 1972), helicopter and aircraft designer, was born in Kiev, Russia (now Ukraine), the son of Ivan Alexis Sikorsky and Zinaida Stepanovna, both physicians. Sikorsky’s father played a prominent role in the development of psychiatry in prerevolutionary Russia. Sikorsky received a great deal of affection and attention from both his parents and his siblings. Encouragement by his family to appreciate and explore the arts and sciences at an early age helped to nurture an inquisitiveness that would become an important part of his persona.
