Shaw, Henry (24 July 1800–25 August 1889), frontier merchant and philanthropist, was born in Sheffield, England, the son of Joseph Shaw, a manufacturer, and Sarah Hoole. After elementary education near his home town of Sheffield, Shaw attended Mill Hill, a Dissenters’ school near London. He developed an interest in the ancient classics as well as English and French literature.
