Shaw, Henry (24 July 1800–25 August 1889), frontier merchant and philanthropist, was born in Sheffield, England, the son of Joseph Shaw, a manufacturer, and Sarah Hoole. After elementary education near his home town of Sheffield, Shaw attended Mill Hill, a Dissenters’ school near London. He developed an interest in the ancient classics as well as English and French literature. At this school, which had formerly been the home of botanist Peter Collinson, he also became interested in trees and flowers on the school grounds....
