Jones, Mary Amanda Dixon (17 February 1828–1908), physician and surgeon, was born in Dorchester County, Maryland, the daughter of Noah Dixon and Sarah Turner, middle-class shipbuilders. Mary Dixon graduated from Wesleyan Female College in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1845. She taught physiology and literature, first at her alma mater and then at the Baltimore Female College. Later she became principal of a girls’ seminary in southern Maryland. In the 1840s she read medicine with two local physicians, Henry F. Askew and Thomas E. Bond....
