Kane, John Kintzing (16 May 1795–21 February 1858), jurist, was born in Albany, New York, the son of Elisha Kane, a merchant, and Alida Van Rensselaer. The Kane family removed to Philadelphia in 1801, following the death of Mrs. Kane, and in 1807 Elisha Kane married Elizabeth Kintzing of Philadelphia. A fondness for his father’s bride, and a desire to distinguish himself from several cousins bearing the same name, prompted John Kane to adopt his stepmother’s maiden name as part of his own....
