Bouvier, John (1787–18 November 1851), legal scholar, was born at Condognan, Department of Gard, France, the son of John Bouvier and Marie Benezet. The family came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1802 to enter the mercantile business with the Benezet family. While Bouvier was in his teens his father died and he began learning the printing and publishing trade from Benjamin Johnson of Philadelphia. In 1808 he became the proprietor of a small printing business in West Philadelphia.
