MacArthur, Catherine T. (23 November 1908–15 December 1981), insurance executive and philanthropist, was born Catherine Terese Hyland to a humble family of devout Irish Catholics on the South Side of Chicago. From a young age, Catherine was taught the value of entrepreneurship. Her father, James Hyland, was a day laborer who, through hard work and perseverance, saved enough to purchase several retail stores and went into the real estate business. He was also involved in local politics, serving as an advisor to many Democratic administrations. Her mother also worked as a housekeeper to help support Catherine’s eight siblings....
