Hubbell, Frederick Marion (17 January 1839–11 November 1930), businessman, was born in Huntington (now Shelton), Connecticut, the oldest son of Francis B. Hubbell, a stonemason, and Augusta Church. After completing high school in 1855, Hubbell traveled west with his father who had decided to speculate on Iowa land. Once in Fort Des Moines (the name was changed to Des Moines in 1857), young Hubbell took a job at the federal land office while his father investigated property for sale. His father soon purchased land, sold it at a profit, and prepared to return home. But his son, who was known as Fred and later F.M., saw opportunities in Des Moines and chose to stay....
