Wanamaker, John (11 July 1838–12 December 1922), merchant, was born in what is now the Gray’s Ferry area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Nelson Wanamaker, a brickmaker, and Elizabeth Deshong Kochersperger. Competition from larger brickmaking firms caused his grandfather John Wanamaker, who was also in the brickmaking business, to move in 1849 to the outskirts of Leesburg, Indiana. Wanamaker’s father, seeking to continue a business partnership with his own father, joined the elder Wanamaker on his farm a year later.
