Hyde, Henry (18 April 1924–29 November 2007), U.S. congressman and sponsor of the Hyde Amendment outlawing federal funding of abortions, was born in Chicago, one of three children of Henry Clay Hyde, a telephone company coin collector, and Monica Kelly Hyde. His father was of English descent. His mother, an Irish Catholic, sent the children to Catholic schools, which left a deep impression on young “Hank.” The Depression cost the family their home in suburban Evanston and forced them into a cramped apartment above a bar....
