Simon, William E. (27 November 1927–03 January 2000), secretary of the treasury, was born William Edward Simon in Paterson, New Jersey, son of Charles Simon, Jr., a moderately well‐to‐do insurance broker, and Eleanor Kearns Simon, a homemaker. Simon's mother died when he was eight, and he grew up in Spring Lake, New Jersey, with his brother and two sisters.
