Collins, Joseph Lawton (01 May 1896–12 September 1987), army officer, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of Jeremiah Bernard Collins and Catherine Lawton. His father, an Irish immigrant and a veteran of the Union army, was a grocer and merchant. At age sixteen Joseph entered Louisiana State University but received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point the next year. He graduated from West Point in 1917 and was commissioned in the infantry. Ordered to occupation duty in Germany shortly after the World War I armistice, he remained there two years. In 1921, in Koblenz, Germany, he married Gladys Easterbrook, the daughter of a chaplain. They had three children....
