McCarthy, Joseph (14 November 1908–02 May 1957), U.S. senator, was born Joseph Raymond McCarthy on a dairy farm near Appleton, Wisconsin, the son of Timothy McCarthy and Bridget Tierney, farmers. At age sixteen McCarthy quit school to begin a poultry business on rented land. When a bitter winter killed most of his flock, he returned to high school in the fall of 1929 and crammed four years of work into two semesters.
