Talmadge, Eugene (23 September 1884–21 December 1946), politician, was born in Forsyth, Georgia, the son of Thomas Romalgues Talmadge, a planter and cotton gin operator, and Carrie Roberts. At the urging of his father, an alumnus, Gene Talmadge enrolled at the University of Georgia in 1901. In 1904 he left school to take a teaching post in Auburn, Georgia. In a pattern common throughout Talmadge’s restless life, he quickly soured on the monotony and isolation of the rural teacher’s existence. After one year in Auburn, he returned to the University of Georgia to attend law school. He began practicing law in Atlanta in 1907....
