Pershing, John Joseph (13 September 1860–15 July 1948), commander of the American Expeditionary Force in World War I, was born at Laclede, Missouri, the son of John Frederick Pershing, a storekeeper and railroad worker, and Anne Elizabeth Thompson. After attending the Missouri State Normal School in Kirksville, Pershing became a schoolteacher, but a newspaper notice enticed him to apply for admission to the U.S. Military Academy, which he entered in 1882....
