Tillman, Benjamin Ryan (11 August 1847–03 July 1918), governor of South Carolina and U.S. senator, was born at “Chester,” his family’s farm in Edgefield District, South Carolina, the son of Sophia Hancock and Benjamin Ryan Tillman, farmers and innkeepers. The Tillman family had resided in South Carolina since before the American Revolution. When “Ben” was two years old, his father died of typhoid fever, and Ben’s capable mother took over the management of the farm and inn....
