Smith, Melancton (24 May 1810–19 July 1893), naval officer, was born in New York City, the son of Melancton Smith, a colonel during the War of 1812, and Cornelia Haring. Smith began his naval career on 1 March 1826 with a three-year tour of duty in the Pacific. He then attended the naval school in New York, becoming a passed midshipman in April 1832. He next alternated cruises in the West Indies with shore duty in New York. Smith was promoted to lieutenant in 1837, and the same year he married Mary Jackson Jones. He was involved in the Seminole War during 1839 and 1840....
