Yates, Richard (18 January 1815–27 November 1873), governor and senator, was born in Warsaw, Gallatin County, Kentucky, the son of Henry Yates, a farmer, and Millicent Yates, granddaughter of Michael Yates of Virginia. The youth attended local schools and worked on the farm until the family moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1831.
