Davis, Henry Winter (16 August 1817–30 December 1865), congressman and author, was born in Annapolis, Maryland, the son of Reverend Henry Lyon Davis, the president of St. John’s College and Episcopal pastor of St. Ann’s Parish in Annapolis, and Jane Brown Winter. Davis was tutored at home, learning to read by the time he was four.
